This 3-panel triptych was commissioned by the rich Benedictine Abbey Saint-Amand, near Valenciennes.  It depicts the martyrdom of St. Stephen and scenes from his life.  In the Stoning of St. Stephen (center pane), angels bring him the martyr’s crown and palm branch as he is stoned to death.  The two laterals, named “The Annunciation,” are from the reverse of the triptych.
