This subject appeared in Rubens’ work from early in his career, starting with a large triptych (3 panels) for Antwerp Cathedral c1612-1614. Christ is removed from the cross by Joseph of Arimathea and John, who both stand on ladders, as a helper assists from the top. Mary stands below, arms raised to receive the body. Mary Magdalene and Mary Cleophas (?) are depicted in lower left.
